Combining form and function, French-door refrigerators come with stylish double doors that open up to a spacious fridge up the top and a freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out because of their special features, including through-the-door dispensers and higher-end ice makers.

We contacted Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect and founder of LS Projects - for her advice on how to choose the right home. We looked at the storage capacity, layout, and energy efficiency, among other factors.

As its name suggests, the GE Profile series is aimed at people who want to incorporate cutting-edge technology into their kitchen. This refrigerator has it all, from the Keurig K cup coffee maker inside the door to a sophisticated dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. This fridge is expensive and I expected more.

Aside from that blip the fridge is a fantastic choice. It boasts a spacious freezer compartment, which is quite uncommon in counter-depth french style fridge freezers door fridges, and it holds a good amount of frozen foods compared to similar models.

The fridge is equipped with 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment has 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is roughly on the same as an French door fridge that costs this much. It also has a decent sized ice maker packed into the left door, though it's not the largest I've seen.

You can adjust the shelving in each compartment to create a customized storage layout for what you want to store. The GE PYE22PYNFS's design for the interior is good-looking, too. The LED lighting adds a nice feature. The in-door storage bins have a third shelf which can be folded down to store tall items. The drawers include temperature controls that allow you to set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. The drawers are simple to shut and open, but I found the plastic's textured coatings a bit hard on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator comes with the complete set of features you'd expect from a refrigerator at this price with Wi-Fi and app support through GE's SmartHQ software. The app, which is available for iOS and Android devices can let you control your fridge from anywhere in world, and offers many options for customizing. It also sends you notifications when the door is unlocked and when the freezer or fridge must be defrosted and when the filter needs to be changed.

It is nice to have GE PYE22PYNFS had Precise Fill, an option available in a handful of GE refrigerators that allow users to set the number of cups they would like to dispense. The fridge displays a countdown timer to display how much water is left but it's not as effective as Precise fill.

Bosch Counter Depth french door fridge counter depth Door Refrigerator

Created to appear like a seamless part of your kitchen, Bosch's French-door refrigerator is an eye-catching piece. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment which keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer periods, and two compressors to preserve food items. The ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient and makes the shape of a pyramid using only water. This refrigerator is the ideal option for a single family or kitchenettes who want an integrated look and top-of-the-line food preservation.

This fridge was the top-rated refrigerator in our Refrigerators test, for a few reasons. Its freezer temperatures remained constant at just above 0°F and never fluctuated by more than a fraction, this is crucial to prevent the risk of a freezer burn. The fridge section of the fridge also performed well. It reached the initial temperature set within an hour, and remained at that temperature throughout our testing.

Bosch is known for its top-of-the-line appliances and appliances, so it's not a surprise that this counter-depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance, with the option of connecting to your home Wi-Fi and Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app lets you monitor and control your refrigerator remotely on your tablet or smartphone. The refrigerator is costly and has great features and capabilities at a reasonable price.

While the fridge is a fantastic appliance however, it is important to understand the limitations. It has a limited shelf space, which means you may have to think creatively when storing tall objects. The shelves are not impervious to spills and could easily be stained or damaged by sharp items. It's easy to remove the refrigerator trays However, be sure to keep them clean to avoid the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth french door fridge integrated Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is a great counter-depth refrigerator that packs a lot of storage into a compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge features the standard French door layout, with two rows of shelving with spill-capture and a set of crisper drawers. The top shelf on the right can be folded down to give taller items more room. You'll also find a full-width drawer for deli and an inside water dispenser.

This refrigerator is equipped with an ice maker making it simple to transfer ice when needed. The freezer has thoughtful design elements, too, like sliding drawers that can help you better organize the position of your items. It also has a large bin that can hold plenty of frozen food items and a separate container for storing ice.

Smart InstaView panel is a cool feature of the refrigerator. It allows you to control the fridge's temperature as well as lighting via your smartphone. It's a good way to monitor and manage your refrigerator, especially if you're away from home.

However, while the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it does not necessarily add to the overall performance of the refrigerator. The fridge took a bit longer to chill food and defrost it than the other fridges we test. This is likely due to the bigger capacity.

The doors are another problem with this refrigerator. They have handles that are sunken on the front, which allow smaller people to open them from the bottom, however they're not easy for taller people to steer shut without slamming them. It would have been more effective if these had front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is an excellent choice for those who want to combine the aesthetics of a French-door refrigerator with a more efficient design. Its capacity is superior for a counter-depth model and it cools evenly and has a good layout. It's also less expensive than the most expensive counter depth refrigerator that comes with an ice maker, making it a great choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a great choice when you're looking for a French door fridge that won't break the budget. It has a simple design that isn't as striking in appearance as other models but it does have enough features to make it a solid option. Its most important characteristic is the adjustable temperature drawer that helps keep food items like veggies and meat fresher for longer. It also has a large ice maker and a water dispenser.

The "Chill Drawer", which is located above the two crisper bins, is another nice feature. The drawer allows you to divert some of the refrigerator's cooling power directly into this area, so you can keep food items that need extra attention. This feature is adjustable using a slider on the outside of the drawer. You can also alter the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've found that the generic settings work better than the specific ones.

During my tests, the temperature of the refrigerator were fairly consistent across all areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the refrigerator did not differ much from 38 degrees. This is a great performance however it doesn't make it into the top ten in our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. The fridge can be linked with a smart thermostat in order to get more accurate readings on the internal temperature of your fridge.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made of gray-bodied stainless with a "smudge proof" finish. It wards off streaks and fingerprints better than other stainless steel finishes I've tried.
