A robot vacuum is able to keep floors clean enough to decrease the frequency with which you need to manually vacuum. Choose one that has good navigation, can sweep corners and stairs and also has a large dust bin that needs emptying only every few times.

There are models that can mop and charge themselves, a feature that may be important for people with pets or children. A lot of the top performers in our tests offer decent obstacle-avoiding capabilities.

1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO is identical to its sibling the i3 EVO. They differ only in that the i3+ comes with self-emptying capabilities. The i3+ is a good alternative for those who want a an automated, hands-free cleaning experience, but want to manually empty the dust bin after it has filled up.

Both robots are adept in removing dirt and dust particles on carpets and hard floors and can maneuver around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates intelligent maps of your home that aid the i3+ EVO navigate and clean in a manner that maximizes efficiency. The i3+ does not have the same obstacle avoidance capabilities as the i7+ or other top-rated robots that we tested. It can be stuck on power cords and socks, and may have trouble navigating between different surfaces like rug and hardwood.

iRobot recommends that you tidy up the area where the i3+ EVO vacuums prior to using it. This includes putting away any toys or other items it might encounter. Also, keep the dustbin and filter clean to prevent them from becoming clogged. When the i3+'s internal bin is full or its battery is empty it goes back to its docking station, automatically emptying its dirt into the station's dust bin, and then continues cleaning the area where it began. The i3+ EVO's battery lasts for approximately an hour and a half continuous use, and takes about three hours to recharge.

2. Roomba by iRobot

The iRobot i7+ is the top model in iRobot's flagship line, and it comes with the latest technology. It's self-charging and self-navigating, but the most important feature is its auto-emptying bin. This removes the need for regular maintenance.

The Roomba i7+ can keep up to 10 floor plans and their names thanks to Imprint Smart Mapping, which lets it map rooms so it can clean them more efficiently. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning tasks, and you can direct your robot using the app or voice.

In our tests, the i7+ was more agile and faster than our top choice, the eufy RoboVac G30, and it took large pieces of pet hair from all surfaces types, including carpeting. The biggest advantage over the Eufy is the self-emptying bin that eliminates major sources of maintenance and lowers the cost of recurring maintenance.

We were also impressed by the i7+'s integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services that we used to instruct the robot to begin, stop or pause its cleaning session, move itself around the room and vacuum a specific space. The process of connecting the i7+ to these services was simple and straightforward using the iRobot Home app. Once connected we were able to give the i7+ voice commands like "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options to manage i7+ settings and monitoring performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is an athletic car in a world of vacuums with cords that feel like minivans and buses. It is powerful enough to replace a traditional stand-up vacuum in most homes, but it is also compact enough to fit on the bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered by a seven-cell, high-energy lithium-ion battery that can provide fade-free power for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filter system removes allergens, and then releases cleaner air back into your home. Its cleaning head is specially designed and drives bristles of nylon that are stiff and deep into carpet to collect large dust and crumbs. It comes with three suction modes to match the task that is being completed. It quickly converts from handheld vacuum to floor vacuum, and then back to floor.

This model comes with a dock that can charge the Dyson to 100% in 3.5 hours. It also provides the ability to connect two attachments as well as a Wand. This is a major improvement over older Dysons that require a lengthy charge and are difficult to store.

The biggest issue with the V10 is its limited run time. The claims of its marketing that it can provide up to 60 minutes of running time are a bit misleading, as CR's testing shows. This is a standard battery-powered cordless vacuum's running time. That's still enough run time to get rid of the majority of a home that's average size however, it's not enough to get every single spot (though a second run-through usually will suffice). This model has its own advantages however: it's light and more maneuverable than earlier Dysons cordless models, and its vacuuming ability is noticeable superior on carpets with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694"

One of iRobot's most adored best robot vacuum for vinyl plank floors vacuums, the 694 is a basic model that's a good choice for people who don't want to invest too much on a robotic. It's capable of sucking up most types of debris and sizes during our tests, and it often goes over the same areas multiple times to get a really thorough clean. Its flat front makes it possible to reach corners and the edges of walls.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt to stay clear of obstacles and navigate your home, but it's not equipped with the mapping capability of more sophisticated models like our top selections, the i3+ EVO and the j7+ series. This means that it is sometimes stuck on things like phone cords and furniture that isn't as sturdy, and frequently will run out of battery before making it back to its home base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum reviews is superior in many ways to the Roomba 694, as it has fewer parts that require regular cleaning, is outfitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtration system, incurs lower recurring cost and is more sophisticated in its automation capabilities and can better maneuver its own. It also has a bigger dustbin and charges quicker.

The eufy RoboVac X8 has a superior battery longevity than the Roomba 694. It also has physical boundaries strips that can be controlled with the voice assistant on your smartphone. It is also more robust, has a more powerful motor, and can perform better on low-pile and bare floors.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a household name in home electronics. It's no surprise that they are also among the top manufacturers of robot vacuums and mop. Their Jet Bot AI+ is equipped with cutting-edge onboard technology for navigation and obstacle avoidance.

The app offers a variety of options for customizing your robotic cleaner. This includes virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior customizations, docking frequency settings and much more. It's easy to understand and is user-friendly, which is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our tests during our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors, and removed 86 percent of dog hair (on carpet). It didn't do very well in avoiding taller items such as socks or cords. This was disappointing. It's also a little more expensive than the other models we tested, which might be a deterrent for some shoppers.

The app allows you to access the camera onboard of the smart vacuum. You can also create live streaming from the robot's cleaning zone. This feature allows you to keep track of your pets or children when you're away from home. The dustbin and filter can be washed for quick, easy cleanup. The Jet Bot AI+ also comes with a clean station that's self-emptying and helps keep the robot's dustbin clean and optimizes its suction power for each cleaning.

6. Black & Decker Robot Vacuum

Unlike other robotic vacuums, that are specifically designed for carpets and hard floors, Black and Decker robots are designed specifically for hard floors. They come with a wide cleaning path and an extra-large dust bin that can hold 2X more debris than competitors to keep the area clean for the longest time. Plus, they include two side sweepers to clean up around edges and in corners. The POWERSERIES model includes AutoSense, which automatically adjusts the power level according to whether it's collecting dirt on the surface or embedded dirt. The vacuum also has an app that lets you to view an interactive map, control functions, and schedules. You can also track the status of the vacuum and then send it to the dock for charging at the press of a single button. The app also lets you to personalize the LED lights on top of the vacuum with different colors so you can easily tell which areas it's focused on or where it's stuck.

The app allows you to manually steer the bagless robot vacuum when needed. For instance my living room rug has a darkly colored border that tends to cause confusion for other robots I've tested. However the HRV 425BL kept moving across the border without registering it as a cliff. Also, the ability to program a weekly cleaning schedule is a wonderful time-saving benefit.
